One of the most elaborate gifts I have ever received was a bedroom set. I was thirteen and my parents stocked my bedroom with this ornate headboard, side tables, dresser, and armoire. The space changed from a Mickey Mouse play place to what felt like the room of a lady. It is the nicest furniture we own.
Here is a reminder of what it looked like in its original form. Gold, jangly drawer pulls alongside intricate knobs. Beautiful, but just not exactly us in style. I dare not paint these pieces. I’m much too afraid. I’ve also considered gel stain (and still consider it) to make it darker, but haven’t taken the plunge.
That’s where these guys come in. I had wanted to update the hardware for maybe even years, but was unsure of what to go with. Finally, a trip to Hobby Lobby revealed a 50% knob sale, resulting in each one of these being approximately $2 a piece. Not bad.
The turquoise knobs were incredibly simple to install, no tools necessary. You just screw it into the hole where the previous knob was. Easy.
The drawer pulls were still easy but did require a screw gun and a drill bit since it wasn’t spaced exactly the same as the old pulls (meaning I had to drill new holes). The old holes are hiding under the ends of the new pulls. Again, easy.
I love how the new hardware doesn’t fight against the style of the furniture, but simply takes it in a different direction with a subtle suggestion of antique Spanish (or so I imagine).
I’m quite pleased. And for a grand total of $32 for a dresser and two bedside tables, it’s a pretty affordable method of updating your space. If you’re interested in doing the same, check out Hobby Lobby’s website and search knobs. You will be able to see when they are on sale, and if there aren’t enough of what you need in store, you can always order online.
What about you guys? What simple space upgrades have made a big difference?
