I’ve had a blast showing you the pretty desk and the pretty pillows and all the pretty things, but the nuts and bolts of this project was in the organizing, so allow me to show you how we took this space from the before to the after.
The filing cabinet from the before picture was sold on Craigslist, and the contents of it were placed, unchanged, in the right-hand filing area. After assessing with my mother-in-law had in her work space, I found that there were beaucoups of cards, so the majority of the filing space on the left cabinet went toward that. It seemed impractical to flip through a hundred cards trying to find the most appropriate one for the occasion, so I simply sorted by card type to make it easy.
This little drawer organizer is AMAZING. Why? Because you can adjust the little grey walls and put them wherever you want so that each little pod is the perfect size for what you have. Look for these at your office supply store and buy one.
Here is the real reason this space was saved. A bigger bookshelf that can adequately support all the materials in this space. In this photo it is pretty empty, because we were still sorting everything (what to donate, trash, save, etc). But you get the idea. Bigger bookshelf for more books. I used these little boxes she was already using to corral things like ink cartridges and envelopes.
It was fun running through the house and “shopping” other rooms for decor (like these lovely succulents) to display in here. The china cabinet that was in this space was moved to a hallway where it looks strangely awesome.
The biggest strategy in figuring out the organizational needs were taking stock of what all was in this room by going through drawers and making tons of piles of stuff on the ground. That simple. The home office tends to be a place that gets frequently cluttered (“What do I do with all these papers? Quick, throw them on my desk!”) and rarely cleaned out. It needs some love, because (like the laundry room and the kitchen) if you’re going to spend so much time working in there, why not love it?
Come back tomorrow for our last day looking through this fun office makeover!
