We’ve looked at the DIYs and the organization, now for the fun little details. That wall color: Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore. I love this color: it’s sophisticated but not bland. Dark, rich colors like this totally work in these naturally lit spaces.
My secret to saving money on paint: I take a paint card (or just look up one on my phone) by any company to Lowes and they’ll mix the color in a Valspar base. Meaning: I pay $20-something for a gallon of paint that would be a good bit more at Benjamin Moore. I’ve used Valspar on my many paint projects and love it. I can notice a big difference between it and Glidden (Walmart) paint, but don’t feel like I’m missing out by not using a more expensive brand.
I kind of fell in love with that metal arrow at, yes, Hobby Lobby. No, they’re not paying me to be obsessed with them. *Sigh* I can’t help it. The little cotton bale is from my in-laws days living in a little cotton town in rural South Carolina, so there’s a fun host of memories attached to that. The lovely plant on top was stollen from the living room on the other side of those doors. Greenery is such a wonderful way to make me want to sit and stay a while. The air feels fresher and the view nicer.
A friend in Cuba painted this on their last trip to the country. My MIL was uncertain of where to put it, so I couldn’t help myself and snagged this frame from Target to make it blend with the rest of the natural room decor, but to add a little function to it with the hook. Since this room doubles as a guest room with the futon, it’s not a bad idea to have a place to hang a hat or a jacket.
I snagged the little white frame on the desk from Target and stuck two photos of my father-in-law from his 20s for a little desk eye-candy for my mother-in-law. Hehe. But really, it’s fun having a sentimental photo or two in a place where you spend a lot of time. As mentioned before, the metal filing cage is from (duh) Hobby Lobby and the pendant light from Books a Million.
Had a great time reworking this space! If I continued on this project, some things I would do: figure out some better blanket storage like this or this, replace the desk chair to something more like this, and replace the trashcan with something a little bigger with an industrial look.
Finally, I want to share some of my inspiration photos:
